Football fans who fancy a trip to South Africa next year may be tempted to raise the red card after hearing tales of the eye-watering amounts they’re likely to have to shell out for their accommodation

As the hum of excitement about the tournament reaches fever pitch, it’s a sad fact that hotel and flight prices are also likely to soar.

In fact, according to a recent investigation by the Daily Mirror, some unscrupulous South African hoteliers have been increasing their prices by a distinctly foul 400%, despite the tournament falling in the country’s winter, when tourists traditionally steer well clear of the country.

But heading off to support the England boys doesn’t have to cost an absolute bomb if you shop around using price comparison tools. Here’s the low-down on the nine cities where you catch all of the World Cup action - without breaking the bank.
